Couple has sex for 101 days PDF Print E-mail

After Annie and Doug Brown set themselves the challenge to have sex for 101 consecutive days, Annie found herself worrying about day 33 the most. 'It was totally irrational but I was obsessed that it would all go wrong on that day,' says Annie. 'After it passed, our daily sex became a happy habit. Not in a dull way but something that was planned and part of our life.'

Before their mission, which 41-year-old Annie suggested to spice up their love life, the Browns managed sex when they had the time and energy. 'Our sex was never bad,' says Doug, who was 'pretty happy' when he realised Annie was serious. 'We have two young children and busy jobs, so we were lucky if we managed it once a week. We spent months having strategy meetings to ensure we could do it.'

 No time for sex

Fitting in regular sex around work and play is a common complaint from most couples. A study from the Kinsey Institute found 18-29 year olds have sex, on average, 112 times per year, while 30 to 39-year-olds manage it 86 times. Those in the 40-49 year old bracket do it 69 times per year. Aside from fitting it into your schedules, you then have to ensure it was worth the trouble. Let's not forget that up to 70 per cent of women have difficulty climaxing during penetrative sex. And research has repeatedly shown couples who stay interested in each other have lots of different sex. We're talking wild sex, kinky sex, quickies, intimate face-holding sex and those two-hour Kama Sutra spectaculars.

Sex and relationship expert Tracey Cox says when sex is good, it accounts for a quarter of the relationship's happiness. 'When it's bad, it can destroy everything. When you become friends, not lovers, you put yourself at risk of an affair. But the more you have sex, the more you want it. It's like having a chocolate bar every day at 3pm, eventually you will crave it every day. An orgasm is no different.'

In the mood To keep it interesting 43-year-old journalist Doug says they did it on top of a mountain, in a yurt, and at a porn industry convention in Las Vegas (in a hotel room, he hastens to add). 'At home, we turned the TV off, Annie put on nice underwear and we sometimes used sex toys. Once you're in the mood, you realise you're not that tired after all.'

What if they had a row? How did they avoid the customary yanking of covers from each side of the bed? 'After one row, we still hadn't had sex by 11.45pm, so we just did it like robots and made up afterwards,' says Doug, who says they are now closer than ever.

Did they both orgasm every time? 'Definitely not,' says Annie. 'That would take too much time - the challenge was to just have intercourse. There's no point in bad sex but if you want to bring sex back into your relationship, you have to forge ahead.'

 In sickness and in health

Their biggest challenge was when Doug was admitted to hospital after fainting at home. 'The doctor rang our family doctor, who knew about our 101-day challenge, and she yelled at him, "That man has to have sex tonight - give him all the drugs you can!"' says Doug. 'We had sex but I only managed it for just two minutes.'

Could you go the distance?

Rebekah Scanlan, 22, was set the task of having sex with her boyfriend Kevin Bradford, also 22, for just five days in a row

Day one: We have a few drinks in the pub and giggle about the task. This was probably the most natural evening as we would have had sex anyway.

Day two: Today was the most relaxed session of love-making as we didn't have work-related stress getting us down. We enjoy it as, again, it's not forced.

Day three: I'm going to Swansea today and have to catch a train at 9am so we get busy before I leave but I feel it brings us closer - normally I would just leave while he was still asleep.

Day four: Kev meets me at the train station. We're really pleased to see each other. After a big weekend of partying at the beach, I was tired, and therefore happy to let him take control. The sex is nice.

Day five: Today was the hardest day to get into the mood. My weekend has caught up with me and I just want to sleep. We force ourselves but it's not very enthusiastic and definitely not fuelled with passi
