johnny  - not all mammals are 'safe to eat'   |2008-07-08 15:33:20
see for instance 'rabbit fever'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tularemia

however, your general point is well taken.

maybe it should have said, ALL healthy fur bearing mammals are safe to eat, and will provide you with nutrients and calories.

Water should be boiled at least one minute at ground level for it to be purified. At higher altitudes, it takes longer (up to 5 minutes) since the boiling point is lower.

Also, survival matches aren't a myth. Just because Swedish Firesteel is better doesn't make them a myth.

I agree. Use what you can get, just because something is not the absolute perfect solution doesn't mean it isn't useful.

Bringing a lighter is a great idea, but if you don't have a lighter, it's nice to know how to rub the sticks together. Takes practice, but if people could do it 50,000 years ago, so can you.

The nice thing about plants: you don't have to catch them. But you definitely have to put your time in with a few Peterson's Field Guides. There are some easy ones, though...acorns, for example. Eat white oak acorns as is, or any acorn after boiling in a few changes of water to leach out the bitterness.

I believe you can have "ground level" even at higher altitudes. Shouldn't the correct term be "sea level?"

And for that you get 10 lashes with a wet noodle. However, I will make that an organic noodle.
